Swiss wrestling alpine style - Schwingen - demonstration in New York City

The Swiss consulate and the Metropolitan Wrestling Association organized a unique wrestling event in honor of the Swiss National Day (August 1st). A demonstration of Swiss folk style wrestling known as “Schwingen” put into comparison with olympic freestyle and Greco-Roman style of wrestling.
Hundreds New-Yorkers and visitors from all around gathered at pier 54 on the Hudson River to celebrate with the Swiss or view the wrestling demonstrations. Prominent guests were the Swiss ambassador Mr. Raymond Loretan and also the “King of Schwingen” Jorg Abderhalden, Swiss Wrestling Champion. Jorg Abderhalden was named "King of Scwingen" as he had won all wrestling competitions since 1998.

The Swiss wrestling champion Jork Abderhalden made a great demonstration of alpine wrestling moves and techniques.
After the Alpine Wrestling Demonstration, freestyle wrestling coach Al Bevilaqua, chairman of the Metropolitan Wrestling Association, announced the beginning of the Freestyle/Greko-Roman Demonstration. In turns both wrestling styles were demonstrated with brief explanations on moves and technique
This event wouldn't be unique if we didn't break the wrestling rules. Our freestyle wrestler David showed such curiosity towards the Alpine Wrestling that he volunteered to experiment in few rounds. Happily even if you fall hard on the saw dust, its not as hard as the freestyle mat.
The demonstration finished successfully. Team members and officials got the change to have a picture with the Swiss Ambassador Mr. Loretan.
